Reactions to the Election of Barack Obama

Select one of the following articles, then create a “found poem” using words and phrases from the article. A found poem is composed entirely of words and phrases taken directly from the text of another source—in this case, The New York Times. Think about the emotions people in the article have expressed in response to the Obama victory (joy, hope, pride, etc.), pick one emotion, then look for words and phrases in the article that illustrate or express that emotion. Next, arrange the words into a poem, repeating anything as you like. When you have finished your poem give it a title, also using words taken from the article.

“This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed — why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent Mall, and why a man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.”
