MAKING SURE YOUR COMPUTER IS COMPATIBLE
1.Before doing anything, make sure you can access all the links you need to research your topic.
a. Find your topic
b. Click on all of the links to make sure that you have access to all of them
c.Once you have established that all of the links work, download the source chart.
DOWNLOADING AND SAVING THE SOURCE CHART
1. Click on the link that says “Click here to download source chart”
2. In the “downloads” box, double click on the paper icon next to the words “researchsourcechart.doc”
3. This will open the source chart you will copy and paste all of the information into.
4. IMMEDIATELY!! Do three things.
a. Type your name next to where it says name.
b. Type your period next to where it says period.
c. Save your source chart.
5.To save your source chart, perform the following steps.
a.Click on the word “File” on the bar on top of the screen.
b.Click “Save As…”
c.In the “Save As” box, type your first and last name then “researchproject.” A finished saved file should look like this: danieleppihimerresearchproject.doc”
d.IMPORTANT! In the “Where” box, make sure you change it so it saves in “documents” and nowhere else!! If you do not do this, you will not be able to recover your file!!
e. Click the “Save” button.
6. Remember where you are sitting because that is where your file will be saved. You will not be able to access the file from any other computer.
FILLING OUT THE SOURCE CHART
1. The first thing you want to do is type the three or four main ideas you will be researching in order to answer your guiding question. Type these main ideas into each “Main Idea” box.
2. After that, you need to find the links that will answer your questions. Underneath each link are some supporting questions. Find the link that matches the supporting questions you chose. And click on it.
3. After reading through the material, find information you want to use to answer the questions you have. When you find it, highlight the text by clicking on the first word you want, and while holding the button down, drag it to the last word you want.
4. Now, you have two options to copy it.
a. You can hold down the “command” key next to the space bar and press “c”
b. You can go to “Edit” on the top of the screen and click “copy”
5. Now paste the information into the “exact Quote” box from your source chart, again through one of two ways. Make sure you have clicked inside the box first.
a. Hold down the “command” key and press “v”
b. Go to “Edit” and press “Paste”
6. Highlight the web address and copy and paste it into the “Web Address and Authors” box
7. If you have more than one quote from the same source that answers the same question, you may want to paste all of that information into the same box to make it easier for yourself.
8. When you have compiled all of your information, wait for your teacher’s permission before printing out anything. Give your teacher a chance to review what you have so you can avoid doing it all over again if you’ve messed up something.
